Buying Collectables on Live Shows: A Collector’s Checklist
Share
Live selling lets you see collectables in a host’s hands, ask questions and share the excitement of a new find. It also moves quickly. A little preparation helps you enjoy the show and choose items that genuinely fit your collection.
Know what you want before the show
Make a short wishlist of characters, franchises or card products you are looking for. Add the details that matter: edition, language, finish, size or condition. A familiar name can appear on several different products, so knowing the exact version saves confusion.
Set a total spending limit and leave room for delivery and other charges shown by the platform. Keep a running total during the show rather than judging every purchase in isolation.
Check what the listing includes
Before bidding or buying, read the listing and listen to the host’s description. Ask whether you are buying the exact item shown, a selected variant or one unit from a larger stock quantity.
For figures, confirm the character, edition, size and packaging condition. For cards, confirm whether the listing is for a single card, pack, box or another specified product. Check language, set and finish where relevant. Ask whether accessories or protectors visible on screen are included.
Use the camera to your advantage
The chance to ask for a closer look is one of live selling’s useful features. Request a steady view of corners, windows or card surfaces before committing. If a light reflects off the area you need to inspect, ask for a different angle.
A livestream cannot show every detail perfectly. If you cannot assess something that matters to you, wait for clearer information. Passing on a purchase is a sensible option.
Give each auction a ceiling
For an auction, decide your maximum before the bidding gathers pace. Check what delivery and any additional charges will do to the total. Your ceiling should be the amount you are comfortable paying for that item, rather than an amount chosen to beat another bidder.
A low opening bid does not tell you where an auction will finish. If the price passes your limit, let it go. There will be other opportunities to add to your collection.
Read the platform’s order information
Shipping, combined orders, payments and cancellation processes can differ between platforms. Check the information shown for your order rather than assuming a purchase made during a stream works exactly like a website checkout.
Do not assume that several purchases will automatically qualify for one delivery charge. Use the platform’s current help and order details if you are unsure, and ask the seller about anything unclear before purchasing.
Keep track after the show
Review your order confirmation against the items you intended to buy. Retain the listing details and use the platform where you placed the order for messages about that purchase. When the parcel arrives, check its contents and raise any issue promptly with clear photographs.
The five questions to remember
- What exactly am I buying?
- Can I assess the condition?
- What is my maximum total cost?
- How will the order be shipped?
- Where will I find the order details afterwards?
